some back story…
In 2015, my classmate wrote a short story titled 2047, which won the prestigious Hong Kong Young Post Writers Award. As part of the prize, the winning stories were published in the South China Morning Post both in print and online. At school, the story was shared with students as a Word document, and our English and Chinese literature teachers even dedicated class time to reading and discussing it.
When I first read 2047, I was completely blown away. She was only 12 when she wrote it (I was the same age), yet her storytelling had a level of sophistication far beyond our years. The protagonist, also a 12-year-old girl, made the story feel even more personal and relevant to me.
In 2016, the short story was quietly removed from the SCMP website. That year was politically turbulent in Hong Kong, and things only grew more complicated in the years that followed. Despite its disappearance, 2047 has continued to captivate me.
In 2017, I attempted to adapt her story into a comic but never completed it. In 2020, I revisited it again, this time as a webcomic. Now, I’m bringing 2047 to life once more — this time as my thesis film. Please look forward to it!
